What are automatic rising bollards?
Automatic rising bollards are steel posts that rise from the ground to block a lane and lower flush to let authorised vehicles pass. They are hydraulic or electro-mechanical, and some are crash-rated.
Where they are used
Used in pedestrianised streets, embassy and office forecourts, private roads, hotel entrances and to protect shopfronts from vehicle attack.
Pros
- Clear, open look when lowered
- Pedestrians can pass between bollards
- Crash-rated models give real protection
Cons
- Major groundworks and drainage
- Higher cost than barriers
- Needs regular maintenance
Standards and regulations
Crash-rated bollards are tested to PAS 68 or IWA 14-1, and installed to PAS 69 guidance. Powered bollards fall under the same safety-in-use principles as other powered barriers.
Installation considerations
We plan the excavation, drainage, ducting, hydraulic or electric power unit, safety loops and traffic lights. Bollards are quoted after survey; the from price shown is the loop detector used to control them.
Every installation starts with a free survey. We confirm the specification, give you a written quote, install and commission the system, and hand over with test records and instructions.

Maintenance of automatic rising bollards
Planned maintenance keeps automatic rising bollards safe and reliable and gives you records for insurers and inspections. We service CAME and all other makes: we check fixings, wear, power and battery backup, controls and safety devices, adjust and lubricate where needed, test operation end to end and leave a written report with any recommended actions.
Repairs
If your automatic rising bollards has stopped working, is noisy, is opening or closing on its own or is showing a fault, we fault-find on site and repair it, often on the first visit using parts from our shop. We repair systems we did not install and work on all common makes.
Servicing
Servicing intervals depend on use and risk; most sites have a service at least once a year, busy or safety-critical systems more often. We can set up a service contract with reminders so it is never missed. Installation, maintenance, repair and service prices are POA after a free survey and quote.
