What are sliding gates?
A sliding gate runs sideways along a ground track (or on rollers) parallel to the boundary, driven by an operator with a pinion gear that engages a steel or nylon rack fixed to the gate. Because it moves across the opening rather than into the drive, it is the usual choice where the entrance slopes or where there is no room for leaves to swing.
Where they are used
Sliding gates are common on industrial units, depots, schools, apartment blocks and larger homes with short driveways or sloping entrances. Operators are sized by gate weight and duty cycle, from domestic 400 kg units to industrial motors for 2,000 kg plus.
Pros
- Needs no swing space inside the property
- Copes well with sloping drives
- Strong and hard to force open when locked by the gearbox
- Suits high traffic with the right industrial operator
Cons
- Needs a clear run-back area at least the width of the opening
- Ground track must stay clean of grit, leaves and ice
- Track and rack wear over time and need adjusting
Standards and regulations
Powered gates and barriers are machinery, so new installations should be designed, fitted and handed over in line with the Machinery Directive requirements as applied in the UK, BS EN 13241 (product standard for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates), BS EN 12453 (safety in use of power operated doors and gates) and BS EN 12445 (test methods for force measurement). Force testing at the closing edges is recorded at handover and at each service. The DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) guidance is widely used in the UK for gate safety.
Installation considerations
We check the run-back length, the level of the track, the foundation for the motor base, the cable route for power and controls, and the gap between gate and posts (trapping points). Safety photocells, edges on the leading and trailing edges and a warning light are normally fitted.
Every installation starts with a free survey. We confirm the specification, give you a written quote, install and commission the system, and hand over with test records and instructions.

Maintenance of sliding gates
Planned maintenance keeps sliding gates safe and reliable and gives you records for insurers and inspections. We service CAME and all other makes: we check fixings, wear, power and battery backup, controls and safety devices, adjust and lubricate where needed, test operation end to end and leave a written report with any recommended actions.
Repairs
If your sliding gates has stopped working, is noisy, is opening or closing on its own or is showing a fault, we fault-find on site and repair it, often on the first visit using parts from our shop. We repair systems we did not install and work on all common makes.
Servicing
Servicing intervals depend on use and risk; most sites have a service at least once a year, busy or safety-critical systems more often. We can set up a service contract with reminders so it is never missed. Installation, maintenance, repair and service prices are POA after a free survey and quote.
FAQs
How much room do I need for a sliding gate?
Roughly the width of the opening plus about half a metre of clear run-back space beside it, along a level line.
Can you automate my existing sliding gate?
Often yes, if the gate runs freely and is in good condition. We check weight, rollers and track at the free survey.
Which motor size do I need?
It depends on the gate weight, length and how many cycles a day it does. We size the operator so it is not working at its limit.
Do you service and repair sliding gates you did not install?
Yes. We supply, install, maintain, repair and service sliding gates of all common makes, whoever fitted them.
How much does it cost to install or service sliding gates?
Installation, maintenance, repair and servicing are POA (price on application). We give a free chat, free survey and a written quote first.
