What are swing gates?
Swing gates are hinged leaves, single or double, that open like a door. They are automated with ram (linear) operators, articulated arm operators for deep pillars, or underground motors hidden beneath the hinge.
Where they are used
Swing gates are the most common automated gates on houses, farms, small business premises and residential developments with a level drive and space for the leaves to open.
Pros
- Usually the most affordable gate to automate
- Classic look that suits period and modern properties
- Works with many existing gates
- Wide choice of operators
Cons
- Need clear space for the leaves to open
- Less suited to steep slopes
- Wind load on solid leaves can be high
Standards and regulations
Powered gates and barriers are machinery, so new installations should be designed, fitted and handed over in line with the Machinery Directive requirements as applied in the UK, BS EN 13241 (product standard for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates), BS EN 12453 (safety in use of power operated doors and gates) and BS EN 12445 (test methods for force measurement). Force testing at the closing edges is recorded at handover and at each service. The DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) guidance is widely used in the UK for gate safety.
Installation considerations
We measure the pillar depth (the 'A' and 'B' dimensions), check the hinges and the gate's condition, plan the opening direction and confirm power and control cabling. Gate stops, an electric lock and safety devices are specified to suit.
Every installation starts with a free survey. We confirm the specification, give you a written quote, install and commission the system, and hand over with test records and instructions.

Maintenance of swing gates
Planned maintenance keeps swing gates safe and reliable and gives you records for insurers and inspections. We service CAME and all other makes: we check fixings, wear, power and battery backup, controls and safety devices, adjust and lubricate where needed, test operation end to end and leave a written report with any recommended actions.
Repairs
If your swing gates has stopped working, is noisy, is opening or closing on its own or is showing a fault, we fault-find on site and repair it, often on the first visit using parts from our shop. We repair systems we did not install and work on all common makes.
Servicing
Servicing intervals depend on use and risk; most sites have a service at least once a year, busy or safety-critical systems more often. We can set up a service contract with reminders so it is never missed. Installation, maintenance, repair and service prices are POA after a free survey and quote.
FAQs
Ram or underground motor?
Ram operators are simpler to service; underground motors are hidden and suit premium entrances. Both work well when sized correctly.
Can gates open outwards?
Yes, with suitable operators and brackets, but they must not open over a public highway.
Do I need one motor or two?
One per leaf. Double gates need a pair, usually supplied as a kit.
Do you service and repair swing gates you did not install?
Yes. We supply, install, maintain, repair and service swing gates of all common makes, whoever fitted them.
How much does it cost to install or service swing gates?
Installation, maintenance, repair and servicing are POA (price on application). We give a free chat, free survey and a written quote first.
