What are cantilever gates?
A cantilever gate is a sliding gate that hangs from roller carriages behind the opening, so nothing runs across the ground in the entrance. It is driven by a rack-and-pinion sliding operator.
Where they are used
Cantilever gates suit industrial yards, commercial depots, building sites and any entrance with uneven, soft or gravel ground, or where snow and debris would block a ground track.
Pros
- No ground track across the entrance
- Less affected by debris, snow and ice
- Good for heavy goods vehicle access
Cons
- Needs a longer run-back (about 1.5 times the opening)
- Larger foundations for the carriages
- Gate frame must be engineered for the overhang
Standards and regulations
Powered gates and barriers are machinery, so new installations should be designed, fitted and handed over in line with the Machinery Directive requirements as applied in the UK, BS EN 13241 (product standard for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates), BS EN 12453 (safety in use of power operated doors and gates) and BS EN 12445 (test methods for force measurement). Force testing at the closing edges is recorded at handover and at each service. The DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) guidance is widely used in the UK for gate safety.
Installation considerations
We check the counterbalance length, carriage foundations, post alignment and the operator size. Our shop price shown is for a sliding operator, which drives cantilever gates; the gate and carriages are quoted after survey.
Every installation starts with a free survey. We confirm the specification, give you a written quote, install and commission the system, and hand over with test records and instructions.

Maintenance of cantilever gates
Planned maintenance keeps cantilever gates safe and reliable and gives you records for insurers and inspections. We service CAME and all other makes: we check fixings, wear, power and battery backup, controls and safety devices, adjust and lubricate where needed, test operation end to end and leave a written report with any recommended actions.
Repairs
If your cantilever gates has stopped working, is noisy, is opening or closing on its own or is showing a fault, we fault-find on site and repair it, often on the first visit using parts from our shop. We repair systems we did not install and work on all common makes.
Servicing
Servicing intervals depend on use and risk; most sites have a service at least once a year, busy or safety-critical systems more often. We can set up a service contract with reminders so it is never missed. Installation, maintenance, repair and service prices are POA after a free survey and quote.
FAQs
Is a cantilever gate better than a tracked gate?
Where the ground is uneven or dirty, yes. Where space is tight, a tracked gate needs less run-back.
What drives a cantilever gate?
A standard sliding gate operator with a rack fixed to the gate.
Can you add access control?
Yes: keypads, loops, intercoms and remotes all work with it.
Do you service and repair cantilever gates you did not install?
Yes. We supply, install, maintain, repair and service cantilever gates of all common makes, whoever fitted them.
How much does it cost to install or service cantilever gates?
Installation, maintenance, repair and servicing are POA (price on application). We give a free chat, free survey and a written quote first.
